31 Things for September and maybe longer….

Recently I have discovered that I like monthly prompts, my concentration and boredom levels kick in about week 4 so this seems to be the perfect length .

August Break 2015 Day 6 Notebook

I have just finished August break with Susannah Conway and now I am joining up with toris_tales for her #talesofseptember. Instagram has become my favourite way of communicating it is clean, quick and friendly.

For September I am revisiting 31 Things by Ali Edwards, I’m using her prompts to create an image, art piece or maybe a quote. I hope to document daily here on my blog, which I have so neglected recently. I realise that blogging daily could be a bit of a challenge but I am not going to beat myself up about it, I’m just going to enjoy the process…

So onto Day 1 the prompt is jewellery. This is my take on the prompt .

The supplies are by Anna Aspnes for those interested I used ArtPlay Palette Everyday,  FotoblendzOverlays no6_2

“Jewellery holds memories, of occasions, of holidays and milestones.

But to me the best jewellery is nature’s bounty.. Raindrops sparkling like diamonds, the sun blazing through the trees on a winter morning changes colour into emeralds and rubies. The bright blue sea shows sapphire glinting under the sun.”

Tell me about your jewellery what memories does it hold for you ?

Back to Basics

I am not very good at sticking to a plan sometimes I just prevaricate (like the ironing) . Other times I just can’t decide what to do creatively, I just have too many strands and I often am frozen.

So today I just started with a blank canvas and pulled supplies onto it and didn’t think I just

Friday – If you go down to the woods today.

Yesterday (Thursday) Mark and I visited Leigh Woods just outside Bristol. besides being a wonderful place to take a woodland walk it is playing host to an art installation project by Luke Jerram called “Withdrawn’. I talked about it on the podcast “Pull up a Chair’ that Jessica, Helen and I are hosting on iTunes check it out HERE

Five fishing boats hide in the woods, how did they get here ? Why are they here ? Luke Jerram has used this project to ask questions about over fishing and marine conservation.

First you walk through the woods.

The National Trust, a charity that exists through public donation and membership fees maintains and conserves large areas of coastline, woodland, forests and houses. They are responsible for the upkeep of Leigh Woods.

The trees are magnificent

Friday a Miscellany

mis·cel·la·ny

“A collection of various items, parts, or ingredients.”
 Family finds
In this set of photographs I am wearing many hats. A Be Still Class, a prompt from The Studio. The subjects of this series are part of the family history.
mucisquote_violin
The violin was owned by Mark’s great uncle Will Dermott. Will signed up to go to war when he was only 18.

He was killed in action shortly afterwards. so as you can see this instrument is precious.

The music books belonged to Mark’s mother and father, they loved music and had a piano in the music room where Pat played and Richard sang. Sometimes at Christmas when the children were little we all stood and sang carols together. We have quite a collection of originals.

We have bought some black material as a backdrop I love it,  so now I can be as organic and moody as I like. Also to add to our photography equipment we have bought a little Manfrotto monopod, I can see we will be fighting over it !!!

Hello Friday

Listening to Bombay Bicyle Club – “Flaws”

Clouds scudding
Pink sky,
Crispy leaves
Branches swaying,
Joggers, cyclists,
It’s another workday

How we choose to spend the day is our choice.
But be mindful of your thoughts and deeds.
Celebrate the rising of the sun, the smiles of people you meet.
They need the lift that a smile and a word of thanks brings.

TEXTURE TUESDAY

Isn’t it funny that a day can make all the difference to how you look at the world ? Sunday I felt ill, Fibromyalgia, cold, achy and downright miserable. Not an ounce of enthusiasm and grumpy to boot. Today it’s raining and cold and I still feel achy , but I played with my tripod and trusty Lumix (still haven’t decided on a name) . The light was hideous but with the tripod and Lightroom I had a great time.

I feel Autumn edits should be gritty I don’t know why but the rusts, reds and yellows look so good with lots of contrast.

just-play

 kk_aurora

A different effect desaturated but enough contrast to show the veins in the leaf and the crackles in the pot.

Finally I have been playing with typography and as the retro look is so popular at the moment I made this….

Sigh that was fun…..

PS Thank you Mark for putting up with grumpy me 🙂

Texture Tuesday – Reflections

“To write something you have to risk making a fool of yourself.”
― Anne Rice

I’m in a reflective mood at the moment, looking back and forwards. What I have done and what I really want to do. I find it difficult baring my soul but as I am nearing my 60th birthday some plans and choices have to be made.

I think since my breast cancer scare some years ago I have been coasting not really thinking and not acting. I am so lucky and I am grateful for my life and for  my family and friends.

This is from Kim’s post on Friday what great words thanks Kim for the nudge….

A gentle Nudge

“Struggling with getting stuff done……. making things happen…. moving forward….or perhaps getting started?

Something to consider….
Is your something … a something …..you love.. or something you think you should love?
or maybe just maybe….
Fear is holding you back…..

Perhaps you have some fabulous tips… your own experiences…ideas or stories…
I invite you to share in the comments below….I’d love to hear from you.”

31 Days of Five Minute Free writing – View

coffeetime
View

From my view today I see commuters, students and mothers with young preschoolers. Rustling, bustling wallets open, cards ready, waiting for that hit . Choices choices what to have, pumpkin spice, mocha or espresso?  Here I sit letting it flow over me with my Pikes Place simple but just enough. Viewing from the table trying not to stare. Long dreadlocks with a suit, Doc. Martens with leggings .. Young exec in a snappy suit talking loudly on the phone. The man who shuffles and sings to himself. You can view the world from a coffee cup.

FRIDAY – A SPLIT PERSONALITY (creatively speaking)

“It’s a bizarre but wonderful feeling, to arrive dead center of a target you didn’t even know you were aiming for.”

                                                                                               ― Lois McMaster Bujold

I have a foot in both camps. I love soft and dreamy still life, but equally love the gritty, high drama of the everyday. So here are a few of this weeks offerings.

*****************

Mark and I took another trip to London this time to The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, out of all the photos I took this one really spoke to me. A ray of light hitting some carving in the Painted Hall in The Royal Naval College.
