FRIDAY FINDS – DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF (or how I learnt that not perfect is ok)

2014, digital, digital art, family, Friday, friday finds, heartwork, Iphoneography, journal, Journaling, kim klassen, out and about, Photography, Photoshop and Lightroom, Photoshop Artistry

Sounds of sirens, of many languages. Bustling, running, pushing. This is London, vibrant and loud, flawed and thrilling. Could I live here ? No, but a place to visit and marvel at the beauty. The immense landscape, of modern and ancient, somehow it works. Joggers pant past tourists with maps and cameras, buskers play steel drums all a glorious mess. I love you London…..

We visited London for the day. What a shock, I hadn’t visited for a few years. It was an assault on the senses and I was so tired when I got home. When I loaded my images to say I was disappointed is an understatement. But, when I start looking again I realised that this is street photography, you don’t have time to stand around composing, you get pushed and shoved so it has to be snap snap. So if it’s not completely in focus does that really matter ?

I have decided that I still love the whole Photoshop Artistry thing, and although I don’t process like this so much anymore,  when I do I love it.

It is all about conveying a feeling and for memory keeping so important to maybe slip in some candid shots I have to learn that is OK.

So I am going to continue looking for the intimate, the personal.

Have a great weekend keep looking for those special moments…

My Friday Find is Photoshop I know, I’ve been using it for ages but I am constantly finding new and wonderful ways of playing with my images

My dear friend Sarah at Paisley Rain Boots  has set the Groupies a challenge called ‘My One Thing’ basically it means to try to accomplish one creative thing this week either a lesson from a class,  a piece of writing anything.  Also Cindy at Art is My Life has started a new link up called Show and Share.

So I have tried to jump back into my Photoshop Artistry class.  This class is so full of content that I think I will be learning for a long time,  so whilst I don’t think I will use some of the techniques I have certainly learnt a lot about Photoshop and how to get the best out of all it’s little secrets.

So I started with this image taken at The Bishop’s Palace in Wells about 40 minutes away.
I have tweaked it in Lightroom.
Then I did this
Lots of different layers of rust and texture, I am particularly drawn to architecture and the Gothic style is my favourite. I felt that the woman was too obvious and was drawing the eye far too much so,
I did this.
Adding text lightening up the woman and adding another one in the background. I like the ethereal quality, as if they are drifting rather than walking through the garden. I wasn’t sure about the text so I played around and came up with,

Much happier I got rid of the text added a quote from Great Expectations
On this day of the year, long before you were born, this heap of decay,” stabbing with her crutched stick at the pile of cobwebs on the table but not touching it, “was brought here. It and I have worn away together. The mice have gnawed at it, and sharper teeth than teeth of mice have gnawed at me.”
Also I made my figure into a steampunk musician. what I wanted to do was not make the piece too dark and oppressive , I hope I have achieved this.
Then because I liked my steampunk lady so much
 I did this.

A day to try out new ideas
Using some new techniques I have learnt over the last few weeks from Kim, Photoshop Artistry and Michelle and Rachel Shefveland
I ran a preset I had made using a recipe from Kim in her Beyond Beyond class

Playing around with Downton textures and Canvasback both by Kim.  I used a mask created by Juliette Mead for the Photoshop Artistry course and then added a quote created by Michelle and Rachel Shefveland for their Arts Blend course.

Next I applied a very dramatic preset with lots of clarity and contrast.
I just love the poem from Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows.
Duck’s Ditty
All along the backwater,

Through the rushes tall,

Ducks are a-dabbling,

Up tails all!

Ducks’ tails, drakes’ tails,

Yellow feet a-quiver,

Yellow bills all out of sight

Busy in the river!

Slushy green undergrowth

Where the roach swim–

Here we keep our larder,

Cool and full and dim.

Everyone for what he likes!

WE like to be

Heads down, tails up,

Dabbling free!

High in the blue above

Swifts whirl and call–

WE are down a-dabbling

Up tails all!

Finally I have to add a bit of grunge !   Kim’s kk_Iam and lots of colourburn .

Playing with black and white in Lightroom.

The contrast in this photo adapted nicely to the sliders being moved to the right, contrast was pushed way up and clarity as well to give a gritty look….

Then lots of layers……
Here’s a screen shot ……I used the burn tool to darken the light on the hand then textured over the top to create a cracked effect….I created the stencil in the background using an image I had previously taken….textures used were from the Art of Blending course I am taking and from Photoshop Artistry….
I think this is a keeper……

Here are a few examples of what I have attempted so far…thanks to Maria Amanda at Deviant Art for her wonderful stock photos (winters_melody___stock_by_mariaamanda) find her HERE

I use a lot of images taken at Hestercombe Gardens and National Trust properties as they have such wonderful Gothic architecture. Figure of Victorian gentleman hurrying along the path by Falin- Stock at Deviant Art HERE
